Sculpture
Being with big trees cements for me a divine sense of immanence and transcendence. I can see the trees with my eyes, feel them with my hands, smell their scent, but in all that sensory input there’s a definite interchange of relational knowing that feels dynamic. It’s not just me sensing and being and relating with the trees, they are sensing and relating with me and that feels holy. My sculptures often feature bits of logs and branches that I find. I try very hard not to alter them in any way when making the pieces. What I’m trying to preserve is a sense of their divinity and dignity. Despite being cut down and thrown away, the pieces I incorporate into my sculptures have meaning and purpose. The stoneware pieces are hand built, adorned with a combination of oxides, glazes, or acrylic mediums and single fired.
